This is a detail of the gold painting. The relief is on the plate itself. The glace was removed or reserved from this part before high firing to 2550° F / 1400 C.

I agree with what you said... that the raised areas are in the clay and just not glazed...
Its not raised paste as I originally thought since you can see white where the gold has rubbed off in places... Raised paste would be yellow.
This is probably either a burnish gold or roman gold ...
