Picturesque movement and what inspires you

Postby eganj1 » Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:23 am

On my travels I've seen many of beautiful landscapes that inspired the Picturesque movement, once I'm on my other comp I'll post some of my pictures, but until then I'll post some links.
Read about Gilpin and how the idea of the picturesque movement came about. He saw that the British landscape could compete with that of the Grand Tour

Gilpin and the Picturesque movement's interest in the Wye valley made it the birthplace of British tourism, Turner painted Tintern abbey, Wordsworth wrote a poem about it

So I thought we could have our own international version of the picturesque movement by sharing places near us that would inspire us to paint
Here in Wiltshire it's Avebury and Stonehenge for me, and Cotswold villages like Bourton on the water and Bibury

Bibury, much loved by William Morris
